Mick Cromwell and Cathy O’Leary
Mick and Cathy take on the Travelling Head Lad roles at Trimblestown. Both Mick and Cathy have a wealth of experience and their equine background has ensured they are highly capable and trusted team players. They manages an extremely diverse role which incorporates everything from horse care to people management and lorry repairs to paperwork. Their responsibilities are extremely varied, something they both manage with ease. Mick and Cathy manage the yard staff travelling to the races and act as mentor to the newer staff members. They are responsible for driving the lorry throughout Ireland and the UK for the races and to the sales as required. Working with horses in transit is notoriously unpredictable, from ferry delays, weather considerations, time changes, problematic horses and tachograph considerations (to name but a few) but both Mick and Cathy take this all in their stride are highly valued members of the team at Trimblestown.
Steven is head lad at AJ Martin Racing, he is responsible for managing the yard staff, overseeing the horses morning prep, implementing all tasks pertaining to the horses, delegating yard duties and all aspects of horse care, health and safety and staff management. He is responsible for the yard when Tony is away at the racecourse and ensures everything runs smoothly. Steven has an extensive background in the equine industry and has a comprehensive understanding of the horses nutritional and care requirements.
Michelle joined the AJ Martin Racing team in 2015 to manage the busy office. Coming to us from the BBA Ireland’s Shipping team, her knowledge of shipping and transport has been hugely beneficial, this past two year’s especially with our runners in France, Italy, Melbourne and Dubai. Michelle has an extensive background in the equine industry having worked for Juddmonte Farms, Weatherbys Ireland, Newtown Stud and The Irish Field. Michelle’s role is described as ‘Racing Secretary’ but tends to expand out to Accountant, IT department, HR department and, on occasions, in-house counselling service! Michelle is a hobby rider and, although she loves to visit the horses in the yard, tells us she is definitely best suited to her desk job in racing!
Mikey is one of the longest standing members of the AJ Martin Racing team as a rider/groom. Mikey is a strong rider with plenty of experience under his belt and is held in high regard by all the team at Arodstown. He held an amature jockey licence and has regularly ridden in P2Ps. His patience and understanding with the younger, more inexperienced, horses has been of huge benefit to the team. His horsemanship skills, multitasking ability and willingness to move between roles is a testament to his dedication. Additionally Mikey saddled our yard veteran Pires to take the 2016 Punchestown Charity Ride title.
Mattie is our official ‘Jack of all trades’ here at Trimblestown working on all aspects of yard and staff management and yard improvements. Mattie is also a major asset to the office at AJ Martin, keeping the accounts in order, recruiting staff when needed and acting as the go to person for the majority of staff.
The hard work and dedication from our staff is second to none. We have some very talented staff, both on the ground and riding, who’s efforts ensure we have a highly efficient team in action on a daily basis including Jason Behan, Donagh Meyler, Davy Bean, Masaki Yamamoto, Shane Crawley, Shane Nolan, Paddy Tolan and Tommy Nolan.
